All The Fun Of The Fair

Lee Gap is famous for a fair that has run for more than 800 years. It has traditionally been held on a field between Wakefield and Dewsbury. Until the 18 th century it was a general trade fair that ran continuously from August 21 st to September 19 th. These dates called ‘first o’ Lee and ‘last o’ Lee’ became in time the only dates on which the fair was held. Horse-trading became the main activity, although cattle and geese have been sold within living memory. In much earlier days the fair was associated with Robin Hood.

By the late 16 th century the Lee Gap fair become noted for another trade - the exchange, or even sale of wives and daughters. In some cases there was a practical dimension to this. Those who attended the fair may have had few opportunities for forging family alliances, indeed many were travellers who would meet perhaps only once or twice a year. Both arranged and love-match marriages were the equal currency at the time.

One famous character, Bartholomew Moore, was said to have traded a dozen daughters for horses and to be well pleased with the bargains he won each time. It may be on the strength of this that he was able to quit the life of the traveller to establish one of the first racing stables in the north.
